Frequently Asked Questions

Is the University of Twente Scholarship (UTS) fully funded?

No. The University of Twente states clearly that UTS is not a full scholarship. You must be able to pay the remaining tuition + living costs yourself (after the scholarship amount).

Is UTS a tuition fee waiver, or do I receive money in my own account?

UTS is a cash scholarship (a compensation for study-related costs). UT notes that no costs (including tuition fees) will be paid on your behalf—it is up to you how you use the funds.

Can EU/EEA students apply for the University of Twente Scholarship?

Generally no. UT states UTS is for non-EU/EEA students and is not available for those who pay the statutory tuition fee (which usually applies to EU/EEA students).

I’m a non-EU student but I have a Dutch residence permit and pay statutory tuition. Am I eligible?

No. UT states that if you are eligible for the statutory tuition fee due to your Dutch residence status, you are not eligible for UTS. If you receive UTS and later become eligible for statutory tuition during your studies, you must inform UT; the scholarship will be cancelled and payments will stop.

Is UTS available for ITC Faculty (Geo-Information / Earth Observation) Master’s programmes?

No. UT states UTS is not available for Master’s programmes at the ITC Faculty (Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation).

Can I apply for UTS if I’m doing a pre-Master at UT?

No. UT states UTS is not available for the pre-Master programme, and pre-Master students also cannot apply for UTS when continuing to a Master programme later.

Is UTS only for September intake, or can I use it for the February intake too?

UT lists UTS for Master’s programmes starting in September (the next academic year). If you plan a February start, check UT’s scholarship finder for that intake—UTS is typically not listed for February starts.

Do I need unconditional admission, or is conditional/provisional admission enough to apply for UTS?

For UTS, UT states you must be (provisionally) admitted to an eligible UT Master’s programme and have your student number. In parallel, UT’s general scholarship guidance warns that many scholarship procedures require unconditional acceptance at some point, so make sure you can meet your admission conditions quickly.

If I apply in Round 1 and get rejected, can I apply again in Round 2?

No. UT states that if you applied in Round 1 and your application was rejected, an application in Round 2 will not be considered.

When are UTS results announced?

UT notes it can take up to ~8 weeks after completing your application to receive results. UT also publishes typical announcement windows: for the October–February cycle, results are announced in the first week of March, and for the February–May cycle, results are announced in the first week of June.

Do I still need to show proof of funds for the visa/residence permit if I have UTS?

Yes. UT states non-EEA Bachelor/Master students must prove financial means for living in the Netherlands (UT currently indicates €15,000). UT may accept a scholarship award letter and/or a bank statement as proof.

Do visa-required first-year students have to pay tuition in one go (even if they expect a scholarship)?

Often, yes. UT states first-year students requiring a visa/residence permit cannot pay tuition in instalments and must pay the tuition fee for a whole year in one payment by bank transfer before UT can submit the application to the IND.

Can I apply for multiple UT scholarships at the same time? Can I hold more than one UT scholarship?

UT encourages applicants to apply for more than one scholarship programme where eligible. However, UT also states that you can be awarded with one UT scholarship. Separately, UT notes that some UTS recipients may receive an additional scholarship/top-up in specific cases (for example, Kipaji), if they meet those extra requirements.

How do I get considered for the Kipaji Scholarship or Professor de Winter Scholarship?

UT explains that the Kipaji Scholarship can be awarded to UTS recipients (for specific intakes) and advises you to indicate your interest in your motivation. UT also states the Professor de Winter Scholarship is for an excellent female student who has already received UTS for the same academic year.

How can I support the “top 5–10% of your class” expectation in my application?

UT describes UTS as a scholarship for excellent students, typically the best 5–10%. To support this, applicants commonly include strong evidence such as: high GPA/class rank (if your university provides it), academic awards, research/projects, strong references, and a motivation clearly linking your background to the UT programme.
